The upper arm bone (humerus), shoulder blade (scapula) and the collarbone (clavicle), the shoulder joint is a ball and socket joint which is covered by an articular cartilage that enables its smooth functioning. Surrounded by muscles and tendons, the shoulder joint is considered to be the most movable yet unstable joint in the human body.
The cartilage lining of the shoulder joint starts to wear off causing the bones to rub against each other. The bones start becoming weak when they continuously rub against each other without the protective cartilage lining and result in severe pain, stiffness and weakness when daily activities such as dressing, reaching up, washing are performed, causing discomfort to the patient.
Mobility and reduce pain and stiffness, shoulder replacement is also referred to as shoulder arthroplasty. It is less common than knee or hip replacement but is the most successful technique to rejuvenate the functional life of the shoulder joint when all alternate techniques fail to restore function and comfort to the shoulder affected by arthritis.

This type of shoulder replacement involves the replacement of the entire shoulder joint i.e. both ball and socket are replaced with prosthetic implants. This is most suitable for patients who are suffering from osteoarthritis or rotator cuff arthropathy.
When the surgeon replaces only the humeral head of the shoulder joint with a metal ball and stem, it is referred to as stemmed hemiarthroplasty. It is undertaken when the humeral head is severely damaged or fractured but the socket is functional i.e. normal.
When only the joint surface of the humeral head is replaced with prosthesis without replacing the stem, it is termed as resurfacing hemiarthroplasty. It is undertaken for cases when there is prevalence of no fresh fracture or damage to the humeral head and the cartilage surface is still intact.
Under this type of shoulder replacement surgery the ball and sockets are reversely attached to provide functionality. In normal course the ball is attached to the upper arm bone whereas the socket is attached to the shoulder bone. To enable the patient to use deltoid muscle instead of severely damaged rotator cuff, the surgeon attaches the ball to the shoulder bone and socket to the upper arm bone.
